Mom and Baby Yoga (6 weeks - non-walking, 4-week series)

This class is taught by:

Colleen Butaney

Colleen received her 200-hour yoga teaching certification in 2006, upon completion of a 4-week comprehensive training through the Sivananda Yoga Ashram in Nassau, Bahamas. When she became pregnant with her daughter in 2012, Colleen completed her 40-hour prenatal yoga training through 5 Points Yoga in Cambridge.

Colleen began practicing yoga in 1997, when she took her first hatha yoga class at the Himalyian Institute in her hometown of Buffalo, NY. Her practice picked up speed a year later after she was in a head-on collision. It was this accident that catalyzed Colleen into studying yoga as a form of healing, transformation, and strengthening for the body, mind, and spirit.

In 1999, life took Colleen to California, where she studied multiple yoga disciplines, including Kali Ray Tri-yoga, Iyengar yoga, kundalini yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan, Ashtanga, and vinyasa. Colleen is also influenced by the work of Shiva Rea and Dharma Mittra.

In her classes, Colleen seeks to create a sacred container for growth, transformation, flexibility, strength, and heart-centered connection to both self and community. She truly believes that what comes up on the mat is a microcosm of what one is experiencing in the macrocosm of their everyday life. She is a firm believer that “life is yoga, and yoga is life” and that we should take what we learn on the mat into our daily reality.

Colleen is also a singer, songwriter, and performing/recording artist. She often weaves music and mantra into her classes. She is also a certified massage therapist, reiki practitioner, and tantric educator.

Her greatest joy is being mother to her darling Aria, wife to her husband RJ, and doggie mama to Bodhi. She is eternally grateful to all of the teachers on the path before her, and feels forever blessed for the gift of yoga in her life.

Janine Duffy

A wife, mom, law grad, legal researcher, and yoga addict all rolled into one!

Janine Duffy discovered yoga upon entering law school more than 10 years ago. Since then, yoga has been there for her through the good times and the bad. Years of long hours as a law clerk at the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Boston, as well as being a new mom to two little boys finally took its toll. It was during this tumultuous time as she transitioned to being a stay-at-home mom and battled post-partum depression that Janine found her way back to the mat. Not only did yoga help Janine regain her confidence, balance, and satisfaction in her new role, but it also had a positive effect on her son, James. She noticed a big difference in his attitude and alertness, which made her a believer that yoga was great for those of all ages—especially children! Shortly thereafter, Janine completed her children’s yoga training with Radiant Child Yoga and began teaching kids yoga classes.

Janine’s curiosity about the effects of yoga led her to a 200-hour yoga teacher training with Chanel Luck and Bonnie Argo. It was at the end of this training that she found herself pregnant once again. She noticed that practicing yoga while pregnant was fun, exciting, scary, and sad—every emotion a woman could have. Toward the end of her pregnancy, Janine became certified to teach prenatal yoga at Om Births.

Janine finds the most satisfaction helping women through this tremendous life-changing experience, and focuses on teaching prenatal as well as the post-partum, Mommy and Baby and toddler yoga classes. Her classes help new and expecting moms understand and adjust to the changes taking place in their bodies and minds. Janine’s classes focus on strength-building poses, pranayama, and meditation that are helpful not only on the mat, but also off! Being the mom of three boys, Janine can certainly attest to how yoga helps her throughout any given day!

Kristen Sweeney

Kristen loves using yoga as a tool to help students achieve personal transformation. She received her 200-hour vinyasa and her hot yoga certifications from Yoga to the People in NYC, and trained in prenatal yoga with Juliana Mitchell of Living Now Yoga, also in New York. As a prenatal teacher, she is honored to share space with women on the incredible journey of creating and giving birth. Kristen's classes offer alignment-based, breath-focused instruction, incorporating the dualities of structure/freedom and comfort/challenge. She also loves helping students integrate the lessons and wisdom of the yoga practice on a broader scale into a personal "practice of living." Kristen is also a life coach, an actor, and a writer. www.edgeofthemat.com.

This post-natal class focuses on helping new moms regain core strength and relieve, stretch, and strengthen tired arms, backs, and shoulders. All of this in a friendly, relaxed, and supportive environment.

  • Learn fun new ways to play with your baby while doing yoga poses.
  • Meet new parents in the community and share your new baby stories after class.
  • No need for a babysitter while you exercise since your little one can tag along!
  • Who knows? You may even sneak in a 5-minute savasana!

This class is 60 minutes long and participants are encouraged to stay after to meet and chat with other new moms or dads and share their "war" stories.

We totally understand that babies have sporadic schedules. Please feel free to come into class late or leave at any point. Baby sleeping in a car seat by your mat while you practice? Absolutely fine, too! Please bring a soft towel or blanket for your baby along with a favorite toy. Dads, partners, and caregivers are also welcome.
